Autonomous Positioning System

Revolutionizing Wind Industry Lifting Operations

The Autonomous Positioning System (APS) by Seasight Solutions is a groundbreaking innovation designed to enhance the safety, precision, and efficiency of lifting operations in the wind industry and beyond.

This state-of-the-art system, which has been implemented by wind energy giants Nordex and Enercon, ensures reliable and precise remote control of heavy loads, significantly reducing the risks associated with manual handling of cables and adverse weather conditions.

The Challenges of Traditional, manual Positioning via Taglines

The idea behind the Autonomous Position System was conceived by Vestas who asked Seasight Solutions to develop and design a tool that could ease the heavy lifting operations when erecting wind turbines and in particular the blade installations that relied heavily on manual positioning by tag lines held by operators on the ground.

Seasight Solutions matured the concept, developed the Autonomous Positioning System to increase robustness and ease of use, and commercialized the product.

The Autonomous Positioning System (APS) offers several advantages over traditional tagline positioning, especially for heavy lift operations near highways, in forests, in mountainous areas, and other locations where traditional tagline systems can’t be used due to distance or the limited size of hardstands.

Reduced Installation Time through Enhanced Safety, Precision Control, and Weather Resilience

Safety: The APS Minimizes human intervention, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries. Traditional steering via taglines requires significant manual handling, increasing the potential for human error and accidents.

Precision & Efficiency: The APS utilizes advanced positioning technology for accurate load placement, ensuring optimal alignment and stability. Taglines rely on manual adjustments by several people, which is time consuming and can lead to less precise positioning and potential misalignment.

Weather Resilience: The APS is designed to operate effectively in challenging weather conditions and wind speeds of up to 14 m/s, ensuring a much wider weather window for installation and thus minimizing the number of wind waiting days.

User-friendly Interface: The APS features an intuitive remote control, making the system easy to use when having finalized the specialized training course by Seasight Solutions’ experienced training instructors.

Versatility: The APS can easily be attached to or integrated with existing lifting equipment, making it suitable not only for blade installation and removal, but also for lifting drive trains, nacelles, hubs or containers – as well as for various industries outside the wind sector where precise and safe lifting and positioning operations are critical.
